Story Synopsis

Our story is a window into the historical points of view of race and disability in America and how those two identities shapes people lives.

Our subjects: Black autistic individuals and families share their neurodivergent perspectives and behind the scenes of their lives in a world not built for them and their fight for equality and change.

Our four main subjects are an autistic professional woman who was diagnosed at 58, a mother of an non-speaking autistic son fighting for him and other children like him not to fall through the cracks in education and services, a story of Black autistic man going to prison and a mother and son showing the power of autistic joy and pride through art.

Bookending our subjects' stories will be short commentaries and historical analysis from Black autistic researchers, mental health professionals, high-profile parents of young children with autism, profiles of historical figures, and other members of the African American autistic community.
